Financial Analysis Manager I - Controller

Overview:
Participates on a team that reports the financial results of a multi-entity publicly traded company and performs the assessment of internal controls over financial reporting.  As a leader and a team member, assists management by actively participating in implementation of the new FASB Credit Losses standard, the coordination, execution and review of bank regulatory filings, SEC filings, Federal Reserve reports, as well as various internal reports.  This individual also provides leadership and training of less experienced staff in areas such as the interpretation of regulatory guidelines, SEC reporting disclosures, and analyses of financial results, including reviewing the work of staff members.


Primary Responsibilities:
Interpret and analyze financial results/concepts and present conclusions and recommendations to Senior Management. Independently develop and oversee department operational processes, including coordination with operational managers from other departments. Ensure reports and related disclosures are completed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), M&T Bank Corporation accounting policies, SEC disclosure requirements and bank regulatory guidelines, with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness. Supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, scheduling work assignments, and providing direction to staff in order to meet deadlines. This would include servicing as a subject matter expert and advisor with respect to accounting and financial reporting/disclosure issues. Exhibit a leadership role in department matters (i.e. conducting department meetings, acting as a liaison between analysts and management, apprising management of departmental issues).

Foster a positive and professional working environment. Participate in regular department management meetings and strategic planning sessions. Evaluate performance of staff as part of the performance appraisal process. Perform detailed quantitative, qualitative and financial analyses utilizing complex modeling scenarios on various external data including but not limited to, economic indicators and peer data. Work in collaboration with business groups to provide financial analyses in accordance with GAAP. Actively participate in the planning, execution and review of financial statements for M&T Bank Corporation and subsidiaries, monthly closing of general ledger, and the interpretation and implementation of new technical accounting standards. Provide assistance in monitoring internal control procedures and practices prevalent within the organization and in particular, as they related to Sarbanes-Oxley objectives.  Act as a liaison with internal and external auditors, as well as bank regulators, to facilitate efficient reviews, audits and examinations.


Scope of Responsibilities:
As the organization's technical accounting experts, this position's value is to monitor and ensure that the company's financial statements, disclosures and policies are in accordance with GAAP, while proactively understanding the effects of future pronouncements and regulatory promulgations on the business units.


 Supervisory/ Managerial Responsibilities:
Typically one to three direct or indirect reports


Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Audit, Tax, Business or related field
5 years experience in accounting with reporting responsibilities


Ideal Qualifications:
MBA
CPA
Financial institution experience
Thorough knowledge of departmental software
Demonstrated team player and work leadership skills
Ability to analyze financial data and identify trends, variations or other factors for further investigation. 
Advanced Excel skills and experience with Tableau a plus.
