Estimator

Description


The Structural Steel Estimator reviews drawings from small to medium size projects to prepare time, materials, and labor estimates. Interaction with contractors, owners, engineers, and architects are key to this position. Skills needed are: critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and complex problem solving.
Specific Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes Addenda
  • Assists in Value Engineering
  • Assist the project with estimating duties
  • Communication with parties involved in the bid
  • Prepares Bid Summaries- Assistant in selecting the appropriate subcontractor bidding team
  • Contacts and interacts with related trade subcontractors and suppliers. Ensure involvement of subs
  • Creates spreadsheets for comparatives analysis
  • Digitizes and quantify from drawings
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with all work scopes as it relates to each specific project
  • Insures all work scopes are complete and accounted for on the estimate
  • Notification to involved parties of participation in a bid
  • Arranges for bid bond and insurance quotation
  • Order plans and specifications. Arranges for electronic data to be available for bidding
  • Preparation of detail scope per trade to assure each submittal/ vendor bid complete
  • Prepares and coordinates bid package for the various trades as assigned
  • Insures bid packages are properly distributed
  • Review and understand plans and specifications
  • Review change orders
  • Reviews plans and specifications for conformance with each other
  • Reviews subcontractor, supplier quotes, and scopes
  • Creates and updates the Estimate, the Bid Sum, and all other support software
  • Insures all specified manufacturers and products for all CSI divisions are accounted for, that those products are not single-source products, and that bids will be received from those specified manufacturers or their distributors/vendors
  • Detects discrepancies or need for clarification in the Bid Documents, prepares, reviews with lead and chief estimator, and Submits Requests for Information (RFI) for clarification
  • Follows up on tasks that are being performed


Responsibility:

  • Advanced knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control, plus ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems essentials
  • Knowledge of the different types of project deliveries such as lump sum, design build, CM at Risk, and others, and their different methods of estimating
  • Ability to fully interpret information from drawings, specifications, exhibits, addenda, CPM schedules and project, design criteria documents and all other bid documents
  • MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, Expedition, Timberline, On-Screen Take-off-software
  • Goal oriented
  • Schedule driven. Conscious of time management
  • Strong Desire for self- improvement
  • Good interpersonal relations
  • Good presentation and public speaking skills
  • Able to maintain neat and professional appearance and neat and professional surroundings
  • Able to maintain excellent lines of communication
  • Technical skills in cost engineering, engineering economy, basic accounting, basic financing
  • Analytical focus for problem solving. Willingness to perform a forensic review to establish and remedy the causes of failures.


Qualifications:

  • 4 years engineering degree or equivalent combinations technical training and/or experience
  • 5-8 years estimating, cost control, and/or engineering experience (at least 4 years estimating experience) in a similar facility in steel construction
